History
Barangay Centro Occidental is formerly a sitio of Barangay Lanigay. The church, municipal building and the market site were all situated here , so the place is considered the center of commerce, seat of government and the center of religious activities.
Years later, the PNR -Philippine National Railways station was constructed at Basud. It was decided that the public market be trasffered near the PNR station, but because the seat of government and parish church were still in place, it remains the centro of the Municipality of Polangui. As population grew fast, development in the sitio grew fast too. More residential houses were constructed on the vast track of talahib. Elementary and Secondary School were established. This former sitio of Lanigay became a barangay of its own, called CENTRO OCCIDENTAL, as it is in the western portion of centro.
Barangay Centro Occidental is also popularly called" Ilawod" this is because when people go to market, they would call it "Iraya" and when they go home, they would say "Ilawod."
